Wall paints and finals
There are five types of paint finish, classified by their reflectivity:
1. Flat / Matte: Flat paint (also called matte paint) has the least shine. They provide the most coverage of any other paint and require fewer coats to cover imperfections such as nail holes. While they are great for coverage, they are the least durable type of paint and will be damaged when treated with cleaners, so they are used in areas with low traffic, such as dining rooms, and surfaces not touched. 2. Eggshell: Eggshell finish is a very popular paint finish. 3. Satin: Satin finish is the most common interior paint finish. They have a velvety sheen and are easier to clean than flats and eggshell paints, making them a great choice for high traffic areas such as kitchens, playrooms, family rooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. (Before you use a satin paint, keep in mind that their shake is, unfortunately, more suitable for revealing brush strokes, making touch-ups a bit tricky from the line.)
4. Semi-gloss: Half-gloss paints are shiny and reflective. They are extremely durable and anti-mildew, so they are best used in rooms that receive a lot of wear and tear or moisture, such as children’s rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. They are also great for trim. As a glossy finish, they will show more imperfections than less glossy paint.
5. High-gloss: High-gloss paints are the brightest paint finish of the bunch. They are also the most durable and washable, so they can handle daily scrubbing. Consider this family of paints for doors, trim, and cabinetry. In addition to being interior paint, high-gloss can also be used as an exterior detail on things like shutters. However, the render work is important when using this finish – it can show several flaws when applied incorrectly.
